Approved for the treatment of patients over the age of 12 for use in periodontal procedures, Oraqix is a topical anesthetic gel produced by the company Dentsply and represents an advancement whereby those employed in the anesthesia of periodontal applications may now treat patients in a needle-free environment. Oraqix is made with a formulation of 2.5% Lidocaine and 2.5% Prilocaine and transforms from a liquid into a gel once in contact with body temperature, thus allowing localized application while preventing spread of the anesthetic. Localized anesthesia becomes effective within 30 seconds and lasts for about 20 minutes-an ideal time frame for pain control during scaling and root planing procedures. Each Oraqix pack contains 20 cartridges, each containing 1.7 grams of gel, and additionally contains 20 blunt-tipped applicator tips for safe and convenient application directly into the periodontal pockets. This design option improves comfort and reduces patient's anxiety about the procedure. Expendable applicator dispensers can be purchased separately, depending on the needs of the practice. Oraqix is designed for easy and reliable use with an almost immediate effect and predictable anesthesia.
